Barefoot shoes soak through. Rain boots are bricks with a heel in them. This is a sock shoe with a water-resistant membrane and a thin, grippy sole. That's the whole thing.

You had two options. Both were wrong.
Rain boots
Keep the water out. Also keep the walking out. Stiff, heavy, a heel for some reason. My kids walked in them like they were wearing buckets.
Sock shoes
Soft, flexible, flat. Great right up until the first puddle. Then it's a wet sock with a sole on it.
Meriweather
Soft and flat like a sock shoe. Water-resistant like the thing you actually needed. The catch: the cuff is tall, so there's a trick to getting them on. More on that below.
- Water-resistant membrane. Splashes and wet grass, fine. Standing in a deep puddle over the cuff, water gets in. It's a sock, not a submarine.
- Zero drop, wide footbed. No heel. Toes get room to do what toes do.
- Thin, grippy sole. Bends with the foot. Holds on a wet playground and a kitchen floor.
- Slips on. No laces, no velcro, no buckles. Machine washable on cold. Air dry.
Measure the foot. Ignore the age.
The cuff is tall, so the first time on takes a second. Lap, facing away. Roll the cuff down, toes in, pull the heel back while they push, roll it up. Once they're on, they fit like a sock.
For size, measure heel to longest toe. The size is the foot length in centimeters. Skip the age. My 6-year-olds still wear the 16.5. Size finder
Buying it as a gift? Between two sizes, take the bigger one. A pair that fits in March beats a pair that fit on Christmas morning.

This shoe (sock combo) is incredible! They are super easy to get on and off and my little one loves them! They do exactly what they're supposed to - keep little's feet warm and dry. A go-to in our day to day!
Our twins love these! They can almost get them on by themselves. They are comfortable and don’t cause blisters, but allow them to explore puddles and mud as much as they like. As a toddler mom, I like how easy they are to wash.
